PDF to DWG for AutoCAD
The quickest free way from PDF to DWG takes two steps: convert the PDF to DXF here, then open the DXF in AutoCAD and save it as DWG. The geometry is identical in both formats.
Why does the converter give DXF and not DWG?
DWG is AutoCAD's own closed file format. DXF is its open twin: same lines, layers and text, written in a format any program is allowed to create. AutoCAD opens DXF directly and saves it as DWG in one click, so you lose nothing by taking the DXF step.
How do you turn the DXF into DWG?
- Convert your PDF on the converter and download the DXF.
- In AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT choose Open, set the file type to DXF and open the file.
- Choose Save As, pick AutoCAD 2018 Drawing (*.dwg) or the version your office uses, and save.
BricsCAD, DraftSight and ZWCAD follow the same steps. Without any CAD program, the free ODA File Converter from the Open Design Alliance turns folders of DXF files into DWG in one batch.
What about AutoCAD's own PDF import?
AutoCAD 2017 and newer have a PDFIMPORT command, and it works well when you have AutoCAD open already. It is missing from AutoCAD LT before 2017 and from most other CAD programs. Teams also use this converter when the drawing should stay off shared machines, or to hand a subcontractor a DXF they can open in any program.
Which DWG version should you save?
| Your office uses | Save as |
|---|---|
| AutoCAD 2018 to 2026 | AutoCAD 2018 Drawing |
| AutoCAD 2013 to 2017 | AutoCAD 2013 Drawing |
| Unknown, or several versions | AutoCAD 2010 Drawing, which every current program opens |
